Deer steaks/cigarettes plot goes up in smoke

A venison-for-tobacco crime was averted Sunday night when the alleged perpetrator failed to show as expected.

Police were tipped off about the would-be caper at 10:05 p.m. by a Route 1 Bypass store clerk who said a regular customer called to propose the crime.

According to police records, the store customer asked the clerk to steal cartons of cigarettes for him, with the promise of "deer steaks" in return.

The caller told a police dispatcher he "thought the suspect had been drinking and should not be driving," according to the public police log. A description of the customer and his vehicle was given to police and the clerk said he'd call when the man arrived.

"The customer never showed up," said Police Lt. Rodney McQuate.

"The clerk did not steal the cigarettes so no crime was committed."
